The 50/30/20 Budget Explained for Beginners
Budgeting sounds hard, but the 50/30/20 rule makes it simple: split what you earn after tax into three parts.
The three parts
- 50% needs - rent, bills, groceries, transport.
- 30% wants - eating out, hobbies, subscriptions.
- 20% savings - emergency fund first, then long-term saving.
Start with one month
Write down every expense for 30 days. Most people find two or three subscriptions they forgot about. Cancelling them is often enough to reach the 20% savings goal.
A ready-made spreadsheet makes this much faster - this free monthly budget template already has the three categories set up.
Adjust, do not quit
If 50% is not enough for your needs, start with 60/30/10 and improve slowly. The habit matters more than the exact numbers.
